DARTMOUTH - A 48-year-old man who escaped from a Sheriff's van Wednesday morning is back in N.S. Department of Justice custody.
Thomas Arnold Jones slipped out of the back doors of a Sherrif's van en route to Dartmouth Provincial Court at around 9:30 a.m.
He eluded authorities for about four hours.
Halifax Regional Police arrested Jones in the area of Marilyn Dr. in Dartmouth at approximately 1:30 p.m., not far from where he got free.
Police say he turned himself in.
Jones had been shackled at the ankles at the time of his escape, but police confirm he had the restriants cut off while on the run.
He also made a stop at his daughter's residence on Brock St. at some point before being caught. His daughter would not comment.
It remains unclear how Jones got out of the van, while sheriffs sat in the front seats.
Other offenders were in the back of the van at the time of his escape.
Jones was due in court to be sentenced on a break and enter charge.
Nova Scotia's Department of Justice says Jones also faces further charges, from 2011, of break and enter, assault, arson, uttering threats and breach of conditions.
He was taken back to court this afternoon.
A driver allegedly captured Jones' escape on a cellphone comment and submitted it to CTV Atlantic.
The photo went viral and prompted much discussion of its veracity.
Const. Brian Palmeter told Global News he couldn't confirm if the image was real, but did fall in lines with what happened Wednesday morning.
